From the forthcoming album The Joy of an Empty Trash Can, the second single to see daylight

This one’s mine to carry, for once. I take the trombone solo, and Willem answers on soprano, echoes and long notes trailing behind whatever I’ve just said. Quiet tempo, light pulse, nothing rushing to get anywhere.

The bass drifts free rather than walking the changes, a lineage that runs from Scott LaFaro through Wilbert de Joode’s playing in my earlier quintet work, though here it’s Band-in-a-Box doing the walking, or rather, not walking. Guitar fills in around the edges with open, funky lines, drums keep time underneath, RealTracks throughout, not a real rhythm section in the room, though you’d be forgiven for not noticing.

As with A Day at the Office and Songs on the Eve of Dismissal, now living on as Cubicle Life and Time to Disappear, the sheet music will be available through Sheet Music Plus, along with a free play-along track. Order it, put the recording on, and join in, though this time you’ll have to bring your own long notes.
